Intro: Château Cos d`Estournel is named after its 19th century owner, Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel, and it was he who built the bizarre oriental edifice that is a landmark for any tourist in the Médoc. Today Cos d'Estournel is without doubt the leading estate in St-Estéphe. It is located in the south of the appellation on the border with Pauillac and its vineyards are superbly sited on a south-facing gravel ridge with a high clay content, just north of Lafite.

Region: Bordeaux | Saint-Estèphe (Left Bank)

Winery: Château Cos d'Estournel

Grapes: 55% Cabernet Savignon, 45% Merlot

Aging: French Oak Barrels

Tasting Notes: Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate 94 Points: “The 2001 Cos d'Estournel is blended of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot -- a very high percentage of Merlot in this vintage and a very late harvest, which started on October 1st. Deep garnet in color, the nose is singing with savory notes of smoked meats, tapenade, bay leaves and beef drippings with a core of plum preserves, redcurrant jelly, dried cherries and baked blackcurrants with wafts of peppermint tea and dried roses. Medium-bodied, the palate practically tingles with vibrant dried herbs, red fruit preserves and minty notes, structured with firm, finely grained tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing very long and minerally.” (LPB) Nov 2018
