Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru Cuvee Vieilles Vignes 2016
Intro: This 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru “Vieilles Vignes” from Domaine Ponsot is a serious, age worthy Burgundy built for the long haul. Reviewers describe it as delivering “a refined bouquet of plums, red and black fruit… a classic in the making”. The aromatics include dark berry fruit, licorice and earth, and the palate holds rich structure and tannin depth. This cuvée comes from old vine parcels in the top section of the Clos de Vougeot vineyard, just below the famous Grands Échezeaux site. The estate typically uses very little (or no) new oak and emphasizes old barrels and slow élevage. For example, one source notes “maturation is only ever in used barrels” in this producer’s approach.
