Intro: The 2017 Bourgogne Rouge from Maison Leroy is a regional level red Burgundy from one of the most revered names in the region, yet crafted with the ambition of doing “above average” for a Bourgogne appellation. Although labeled as a “Bourgogne Rouge” (regional appellation), house commentary explains the grapes “are usually grapes from villages and 1er Cru plots, and [Lalou Bize Leroy] blends each vintage to best represent her wines for that vintage.” The 2017 vintage in Burgundy was cooler than the preceding few years, which has helped wines retain acidity and clarity. This is reflected in how this wine is framed.

Region: Burgundy || Winery: Maison Leroy

Grapes: 100% Pinot Noir

Aging: Matured in the producer’s cellars in French oak barrels (exact duration/new oak proportion not publicly defined) before bottling

ABV: 12.5% || Decant: 20–30 minutes || Serving Temp: 14–16°C

Pairing: Roast duck breast with berry or plum jus; venison or other game in a wild mushroom and herb sauce

Tasting Notes: The 2017 Bourgogne Rouge, Maison Leroy shows a medium ruby hue with aromas of bright cherry, black raspberry, subtle spice, and earthy mineral dust. The palate is medium bodied with lively acidity, fine tannins, and a core of red berry fruit supported by limestone driven minerality. The finish is lively and savory, with refined structure and mineral persistence, suggesting graceful evolution with further bottle age

Rating (Complexity & Vintage Year): 92 BB
