Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens Bas 2017
Intro: This 2017 “Les Rugiens Bas” from Domaine de Montille is a serious Côte de Beaune red, harvested from the iron rich, clay limestone hillside of Rugiens Bas in Pommard. A climat often described as having the power of a Grand Cru. The “Les Rugiens” name comes from the red colour of the clay (“rouge”) and iron oxides in the soil of this climat, which impart the distinctive mineral and iron signature to the wines. Domaine de Montille is the largest owner of the Rugiens Bas portion, holding approximately 1.02 ha across their parcels. The estate is known for its whole cluster (whole bunch) inclusion when conditions allow; for the 2017 vintage one source notes “two thirds whole bunches”.

Tasting Notes: The 2017 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens Bas, Domaine de Montille displays a medium deep ruby hue with a slight garnet edge. The nose reveals ripe red and black fruit, violet, undergrowth, and iron rich minerality. Medium to full bodied, it shows firm yet fine tannins, balanced acidity, and a core of dark cherry and spice framed by earthy, stony nuance. The finish is long, mineral driven, and structured. Youthful now but built for graceful ageing
Rating (Complexity & Vintage Year): 93 AA
