REAL COMPANHIA VELHA
The oldest winery in Portugal dates back to 1756. Founded by Royal Charter with King D. Jose I. The first company in the world to demarcate a wine region “Douro Valley” in the 1750s to preserve quality and protect heritage.
The oldest bottle of port in the cellars dates back to 1765 which was considered a memorable year for wine merchants appeared in Christie’s Catalogue in 1768. During the French invasion in 1809, Napolean Bonaparte Troops demanded Real Companhia wines be part of the rations. Lord Wellington and his troops consequently also demanded wines from Real Companhia Velha (300 barrels in 1811)
Real Companhia Velha has 5 vineyards of which we represent 2 ancient vineyards: Quinta do Sibio and Quinta dos Aciprestes (pictured)
